Learn About the Stem Cell Therapy Process
Listen to Dr. Pope, M.D., walk through a typical treatment day at Kansas Regenerative Medicine Center, from preparing for the procedure through image-guided treatment.
The process may vary depending on the individual treatment plan and area being treated. Your KRMC physician will explain what to expect based on your specific procedure.
1. Initial Consultation
Your first step is an individual evaluation with the KRMC medical team. We'll review your medical history, condition, available imaging and treatment goals to determine whether regenerative medicine may be an appropriate option for you.
If you're considered a candidate, our team will explain the recommended treatment plan, what to expect from the procedure, and any questions you may have before scheduling treatment at one of our locations serving Manhattan and Kansas City.

2. Your Treatment Day
For many patients, the outpatient stem cell therapy process takes approximately 3½ to 4 hours, although treatment time varies depending on the procedure. Procedures involving the back may require additional time.
On the day of treatment, you'll be checked into a private patient room where your physician can review the procedure and answer any remaining questions. Your own stem cells are then collected using local anesthesia.
After collection, you'll return to your private room while your cells are carefully prepared. Depending on your treatment plan, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), prepared from your own blood, may also be used.
Once preparation is complete, your physician will administer the treatment to the targeted area using image guidance when appropriate. Ultrasound may be used for certain orthopedic procedures, while fluoroscopy (C-arm imaging) may be used for procedures involving the spine.
Treatment is performed on an outpatient basis, so patients return home after their procedure rather than staying overnight at a hospital.
3. Follow-Up After Stem Cell Therapy
Before you leave, the KRMC team will provide instructions for your recovery and follow-up based on your individual treatment and the area treated.
Recovery experiences and timelines vary from patient to patient. Our medical staff will remain available during your follow-up period to answer questions and provide guidance.
Physical Therapy
Depending on your condition and treatment plan, physical therapy may be recommended as part of your follow-up care. KRMC works with physical therapy providers familiar with rehabilitation following regenerative medicine procedures.
Your physician will discuss activity recommendations and whether physical therapy may be appropriate for you.
